\nThe British government enshrined the British Citizenship of the \u2018Windrush Generation\u2019 and their scions<\/a> in law.\u00a0 That included those without migration papers like children. \u00a0So, like any white British Citizen, they were legally resident without the need for paperwork to prove it.\u00a0 However, in 2012 Theresa May, then the home secretary, created her \u2018hostile environment\u2019 for\u00a0migrants without leave to remain in Britain.\u00a0 May forced all landlords and employers to do border control inland.\u00a0 Or risk heavy fines and or going to jail.\u00a0 But May did not create the hostile environment with her immigration policy; it was an extension of the Tory’s existing hostile environment culture. \u00a0So, we have to push back before Caring Society become a thing of the past.<\/p>\n

Hostile Race Policies<\/span><\/h2>\n

Racial hostility is a feature of Tory politics<\/a>. \u00a0Enoch Powell was not the last torch-bearer.\u00a0 He inherited it from Winston Churchill<\/a>.\u00a0 And although Powell\u2019s Rivers of Blood speech has never materialised, he was right in saying \u2018Whereas all rockets fall to Earth, this one is going to stay up.\u2019<\/p>\n

Theresa May is now her party\u2019s torch bearer for racism. \u00a0May deliberately and proudly created a hostile environment for migrants which has led to the Windrush scandal.\u00a0 And Theresa May knows what she should do, in her own words \u2018Resign\u2019 (video below).<\/p>\n

Hostile Social Policies<\/span><\/h2>\n

The Tory\u2019s use of race is just one of their tactics to divide and rule.\u00a0 The Tory’s promote a hostile society.\u00a0 It is clear in Tory policies which embed infrastructural cruelty and division.<\/p>\n

Tories like Ian Duncan Smith spin questionable narratives of the \u2018workshy and feckless\u2019 demonising a whole group of the vulnerable.\u00a0 It allows the government to enact policies like benefit caps and they cause poverty to be normalised<\/a>. And\u00a0in-work poverty is rife<\/a>.<\/p>\n

But cheap shots like Duncan Smith\u2019s also divides society.\u00a0 Some people believe<\/a>\u00a0there are these ghettos populated by people who prefer a \u2018benefit lifestyle.\u2019 And although they don\u2019t exist<\/a>, the Tory press does not tell the backstory of ravaged industries and broken communities. \u00a0Nor do the Tory’s because a solution would require public spending and that goes against Tory policy.<\/p>\n

Hostile Times For The Sick and Disabled<\/span><\/h2>\n

For the Tories creating a hostile environment knows no bounds. They have presented disabled people as benefit scroungers since 2010 and accompanied the rhetoric with substantial benefit cuts.<\/p>\n

The Tory’s hostile treatment of the sick and disabled is all too familiar. They include assessors letters telling sick and disabled applicants of their fitness for work. \u00a0But sometimes assessors’ letters arrive just after the applicant\u2019s death. Or there are Tory policies like the bedroom tax. \u00a0It cuts housing benefit\u00a0to disabled people with a ‘spare room’ which they use to store life-preserving medical equipment and so on.<\/p>\n

Hostile Times<\/span><\/h2>\n

The Tories treat any group that stands in the way of their policy or ability to rule in a hostile manner. \u00a0So, Jeremy Hunt created a hostile environment with doctors when he wanted to change their contracts of employment. Hunt portrayed them as greedy. And then Hunt cut the doctors salaries. \u00a0May is at war with the police who she accuses of \u2018scare-mongering\u2019 and \u2018crying wolf\u2019. May cut their pay, pensions and numbers. And\u00a0Esther McVey says the government’s rape clause for child tax credit is “‘an opportunity’ for rape victims to gain emotional support<\/a>.”<\/p>\n

The persistent Tory hostilities towards various sections of society may have had us anesthetised.\u00a0 The Windrush scandal appears to have woken us up.\u00a0It\u2019s time to push back with kindness and how we use our vote.\u00a0 The May 3rd local elections are mere weeks away.<\/p>\n
