Leaving the European Union [EU] is no reason to lose the protection of Human Rights. \u00a0However, Theresa May<\/a>\u00a0is keen to ‘Rip up human rights laws’ although the two are independent of each other. \u00a0Her government is grabbing power through the EU Withdrawal Bill. \u00a0Formerly known as the Great Repeal Bill, until May lost the election<\/em>, the \u00a0Bill will allow ministers to make any changes they consider ‘appropriate’ to ‘prevent, remedy or mitigate’ what it calls ‘deficiencies’ in EU laws. \u00a0And that will happen without referring to Parliament. \u00a0AKA the Henry VIII Clause because it allows the\u00a0government to avoid Parliamentary scrutiny. \u00a0So it gives the government a lot of unfettered power. \u00a0The Times reports that the Bill includes plans to stop British citizens suing the government<\/a>. \u00a0So never have our human rights been more important to protect us against state abuse.<\/p>\n

‘The ECHR is not part of the EU’<\/span><\/h2>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The European Convention On Human Rights [ECHR] existed before the EU. \u00a0Nonetheless, Sun headlines<\/a>\u00a0incorrectly, conflate the two. The ECHR is not part of the EU. \u00a0It is only concerned with human rights. But most European countries are members. The EU is an independent economic and political union.<\/p>\n

Human RIghts And Abuse<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

May would have us believe that human rights prevent the deportation of immigrants because they own a cat (video below). \u00a0But that is simply untrue. \u00a0As was Ms. May’s claim about the cat.<\/p>\n

British lawyers enshrined citizens rights in the ECHR after the second world war. \u00a0It was to stop government abusing citizens. \u00a0And\u00a0the Europan Court of Human RIghts<\/a>\u00a0[ECtHR] is a consequence.<\/p>\n

Thus since 1966 individuals can take the British government to court for a breach\u00a0of human rights. However, despite Britain’s influential role creating the ECHR, the British government was one of the last to adopt it into law. \u00a0Nor did the government comprehensively ratify it in the Human Rights Act. \u00a0But British citizens still have access to those rights until May tears us away.<\/p>\n

May wants to remove the building blocks of human rights. \u00a0Protections\u00a0for\u00a0the\u00a0freedom of speech, religion, privacy\u00a0and\u00a0a right to family life. All of which open’s the door to tyranny. \u00a0She has wanted to be rid of human rights for a long time. In 2011 she used immigration as her excuse. \u00a0Today, she uses terrorism.<\/p>\n

State Abuse<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

The Government held the DNA information of people who had not been charged or convicted of a crime. \u00a0The higher arrest rate of black males meant an estimated 37% of black men and 77% of young black men<\/a> had records on the DNA Database. \u00a0But the ECtHR ruled that the UK was violating the human rights of innocent people.<\/p>\n

John Worboys<\/a> was jailed for rape. But when DSD and NBV, two women, reported their rape to the police,\u00a0they didn\u2019t\u00a0believe their stories or take\u00a0the inquiries seriously. \u00a0Society might not believe women <\/a>but their failure to act\u00a0subjected the victims to \u2018inhuman or degrading treatment\u2019. A breach of human rights.<\/p>\n

So was the government charging trafficked children with criminal offences.\u00a0It was a <\/span><\/span>human rights action that saw them set free<\/a><\/span><\/span>. \u00a0The Lord Chief Justice said they were victims of a ‘vile trade’ and not criminals.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

And when the council forcibly removed Steve Neary<\/a>, a young man with learning disabilities from his home. \u00a0The right to a family and privacy meant that the council should have listened to his wishes before they removed and imprisoned him for a year. \u00a0Nor can the government continue to deny workers access to justice<\/a> by imposing tribunal fees of \u00a31,200.<\/p>\n

We need our human rights now more than ever. \u00a0Please, do not throw them away. \u00a0You can start saving them by signing the petition<\/a>\u00a0or start one and create change.<\/p>\n

Human rights, protect us from Theresa May’s government. Amen.<\/p>\n
