The good news is that the divorce rate has continually fallen, especially amongst graduate couples.\u00a0 When there is a divorce, it is clear that there is no equality<\/a> between the sexes.\u00a0 Women with successful husbands could receive \u2018joint-lives\u2019 orders. \u00a0They are labelled the \u2018meal ticket\u2019 divorce<\/a>.\u00a0 No innuendo there! \u00a0The bad news is now when marriages end Mr Justice Pitchford<\/a> says divorcees with children over the age of seven should expect to work for a living.\u00a0 How sexist, short-sighted and specious.\u00a0 It plays to the spurious notion of a \u2018meal ticket\u2019 divorce. \u00a0Women who sacrifice their independence and health to raise a family are short-changed.\u00a0 Twice.\u00a0 Once by ex-husbands reneging their obligations and then by judges.\u00a0 Divorce, it\u2019s a man\u2019s world.<\/p>\n

Couples start families based on the natural division that women give birth.\u00a0 The mores of modern society dictates that men earn more making it expedient for women to stay home.\u00a0 The aim is to prosper together.<\/p>\n

\"divorce<\/a><\/h3>\n

Meal Ticket Divorce<\/h3>\n

A \u2018meal ticket\u2019 implies that women receive something they are not entitled to.\u00a0 However, divorce settlements conveniently ignore the significant sacrifices that a woman makes when she agrees to become a mother.<\/p>\n

A working woman is an independent woman.\u00a0 Giving up a career for motherhood is also giving up dreams as well as independence.<\/p>\n

Pregnancy takes a toll on health. \u00a0Besides taking two years for the body to recover; sometimes there\u2019s permanent damage like loss of teeth.<\/p>\n

The expression \u2018meal ticket\u2019 divorce diminishes the value of being a homemaker.\u00a0 It says that paid work is real work and domestic chores are not.\u00a0 Every aspect of domestic work is chargeable except when the wife is doing it.\u00a0 Then like magic, this \u00a31.019 trillion industry has no economic or legal value.<\/p>\n

When women have made these life altering sacrifices, it’s the duty of ex-husbands to ensure that their ex-wives lives\u2019 changes as little as possible.<\/p>\n

\"Short-Sighted<\/a><\/p>\n

Sexist, Short-Sighted and Specious<\/h3>\n

Divorcees with children over the age of seven should work for a living, seems attractive.\u00a0 However, like the term \u2018meal ticket\u2019 it distorts the reality and ignores the infringement of women\u2019s rights.<\/p>\n

Mr Justice Pitchford must be aware his decision disproportionally affects women.\u00a0 Even with the existence of househusbands, women are usually the carers.<\/p>\n

It also means women (and children) will have a poorer quality of life than ex-husbands.\u00a0 The primary carer must be available during school, after school and six months of holiday.\u00a0 Part-time work gives this flexibility. \u00a0However, it’s usually low pay with poor conditions.<\/p>\n

Returning to full-time work after an absence of a couple of years means starting again!\u00a0 The rapid changes in technology, and business practice requires retraining. \u00a0A forty-hour week means sacrificing child rearing to paid third parties.<\/p>\n

Divorce It\u2019s A Man\u2019s World<\/h3>\n

Women kept their part of the family agreement. Now the courts say they must work. Sometimes after decades of caring for the family.\u00a0 This view places earning money as more important than creating a home.\u00a0 That seems morally perverse and short-sighted. \u00a0It undermines the arrangement that the couple intended to prosper together and is a backwards legal step.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Custody Act<\/a> 1839 allowed mothers access to their children under seven. \u00a0In the debate, it was said that ‘common sense, justice, and humanity’ dictated that ‘fair protection should be afforded by the stronger sex.’\u00a0 Over 100 years later, those words hold true. The courts should compel ex-husbands, (the financially stronger sex), to honour their agreements and ensure that women’s lifestyles are comparable for life.\u00a0 After all, women took life changing decisions in the belief that their husbands would honour the arrangement.<\/p>\n
