\"A<\/a><\/p>\n

Iain Duncan Smith (IDS) has resigned as Secretary to the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP).\u00a0 His letter of resignation cited the Chancellor\u2019s \u2018indefensible\u2019 proposed budgetary cuts to Personal Independent Payments (PIP<\/a>), the disability benefit, as the reason.\u00a0 The mainstream media have hailed him as a hero.\u00a0 I believe this is misplaced.\u00a0 IDS has implemented the most insensitive welfare cuts to single parents<\/a>\u00a0and the poorest people.\u00a0 The suicide rate<\/a> soared as a result.\u00a0 IDS did not pause, and his honesty is questionable in my opinion.\u00a0 There are two excellent reasons why IDS could have resigned.\u00a0 He is at odds with the Prime Minister (PM) and Chancellor for he supports Brexit and IDS has botched the Tory flagship Universal Credit Reform.\u00a0 These explain his resignation far better than his \u2018crocodile tears\u2019 for the disabled.<\/p>\n

In January in a newspaper<\/a> interview, IDS referred to the \u2018sickness benefit culture\u2019 and hinted at his plans to reform employment support for disabled people.\u00a0 In March ahead of the budget IDS announced the cuts to PIP saying that they would \u2018improve the lot of those worst-off’.\u00a0 These words alone belie his resignation, which would have been appropriate at the time he announced the policy.<\/p>\n

Significantly, hours before IDS resigned on Friday 18 March the threatened Tory backbench revolt had effectively shelved the PIP reforms.\u00a0 Notably, on the day before his resignation, IDS lost another court case.\u00a0 This one involved his attempt to keep potentially damning Universal Credit documents secret.\u00a0 His resignation displaced that news.<\/p>\n

\"Iain<\/a><\/p>\n

There is a slew of cases where IDS welfare policies have been judged to be illegal, but his conscience did not trouble him to redress the imbalances.\u00a0 In January 2016, the Appeal Court ruled that his infamous bedroom tax<\/a> discriminated unlawfully against disabled children. \u00a0In November 2015, he lost the High Court case over benefit caps to carers of disabled people.\u00a0 In June 2015, a court ruled that IDS was \u201cunreasonable\u201d, \u201cirrational\u201d and acted \u201cunlawfully\u201d by delaying payments of PIP.\u00a0 He has even ignored coroners\u2019 warnings that a controversial disability benefits assessment is a threat to the lives of claimants with mental health conditions.\u00a0 A Government funded research<\/a> project concluded that the DWP assessment programme could be responsible for almost 600 suicides in 3 years.\u00a0 IDS did not resign over that!<\/p>\n

\"Iain<\/a>IDS attitude is not only questionable about disabled people. \u00a0In my opinion, he is mendacious.\u00a0 He has lied on his CV<\/a> and misled the public.\u00a0 The Information Commissioner ruled in April 2015 that IDS should make public DWP information welfare related deaths.\u00a0 In May 2015, he denied that his department carried out 49 secret reviews into benefit-related deaths. \u00a0IDS continued to deny its existence to Parliament<\/a> in June 2015.\u00a0 In the\u00a0wake of a 200,000-strong petition<\/a> against IDS the PM, two days later announced that statistics were being prepared for publication.\u00a0 In August 2015, there was another petition<\/a> calling for IDS to resign after his department fabricated quotes to promote its benefit sanctions regime.<\/p>\n

IDS was likely to be removed from Cabinet.\u00a0 He wants Britain to leave the EU<\/a> while the PM and the Chancellor want to remain.\u00a0If Britain voted to stay, IDS Cabinet position would be untenable.\u00a0 By resigning, IDS is clear to campaign vigorously for Brexit, which is where he is staking his political future.<\/p>\n

\"Spiral<\/a>There are also questions about his much overdue and over budget flagship policy Universal Credit.\u00a0 IDS stated in 2011 that over one million people would be claiming Universal Credit by April 2014.\u00a0 By the October, less than 15,000 were on Universal Credit at an administrative cost of \u00a3130 million.\u00a0 Currently, there are 200,000 people on Universal Credit.\u00a0 The target for next year is 12 million. Estimates suggest Universal Credit is unlikely to be fully implemented until 2021, four years later than initially planned and probably significantly over budget.<\/p>\n

Universal Credit is set to reduce payments to claimants by \u00a3900 annually and has been the subject of a four-year legal battle.\u00a0 IDS has been footing an enormous legal bill to keep the documents that detail the problems with Universal Credit secret.\u00a0 With IDS gone, perhaps this decision will not be appealed, and we can see the extent of his failing.<\/p>\n

IDS resignation could not have come at a better time for him. \u00a0He has undermined the Chancellor, who is looking to become the next PM and with whom he has continually clashed. \u00a0His resignation has scored a hit for the Brexit Campaign. \u00a0To them, he will be the hero. \u00a0For me, he has escaped scrutiny for Universal Credit, which has been an absolute disaster. \u00a0Iain Duncan Smith’s resignation was not an attack of conscience, and he is not the people’s hero.<\/p>\n
