Artist and Empire
25 November 2015 – 10 April 2016
Tate Britain: Exhibition
In 21st century Britain, ‘empire’ is highly provocative. Its histories of war, conquest and slavery are difficult and painful to address but its legacy is everywhere and affects us all. The show raises questions about ownership, authorship and how the value and meanings of these diverse objects have changed through history, it also asks what they still mean to us today.

The NPG website under ‘Charlie Philips’ does not show that his photos are on display. The portraits are listed under various headings. These appear to be painted portraits. Before we trot off to NPG to see Charlie’s photos can you confirm that these are on display as part of the Simon Sharma exhibits? Thanks.
Eric
P.S. If Charlie’s photos are, indeed, part of the exhibition he has not been given the same publicity exposure as the rest of the exhibition, and someone should ask NPG to rectify this a.s.a.p.
I take your point Eric. If this is to change, I think we should make Charlie’s work prominent by supporting him and other artists as such events.
Roz
Hello Eric,
Thanks for checking before you make the trek! I spoke with Charlie and he has confirmed that his work is part of this exhibition. I would recommend going on Thursday 03 Decemeber as Charlie will be giving a talk in the evening.

The bogyman seems to have been Simon Sharma, who included Charlie’s work as part of his show but then failed to give him concurrent adn adequate publicity.
