It’s Black History Month in America. And as Black People fight for Black History to be recognised, Trump is trying to obliterate a Black legacy. Barack Obama. The Obama’s are a thorn in the side of Trump and all those with a reductionist view of Black people. A view based upon invented stereotypes of angry ugly women and villainous hyper-sexed men. So, Trump’s raison d’etre is to remove the black legacy that is Obama and with it the notion of Black respectability. Trump has reversed Obama policies more frequently than he has created his own. And he has taken credit for the success that is Obama’s due. Since his appearance at the World Economic Forum (WEF) and the State of the Union (STU) address, there is a danger he is seen as respectable. That is despite being a dishonest self-confessed sexual predator. It’s the ultimate in white privilege.
Independent evidence supports the view that Obama is one of if not America’s greatest president. It is based on the country’s social and economic growth. And on Obama being a President for eight years without, a whiff of scandal.
The Christian Right that supports Trump would have been clamouring for Obama’s removal if he referred to women like Trump does. But Trump is a white man. So, Trump is able to be mendacious, sexually criminal, and be elected President with 17 sexual assault charges against him.
Barack and Michelle Obama were a beacon of hope. And they are evidence that the much maligned, African American, possesses the intelligence and ability of any white person. That is a white supremacist’s nightmare.
Undoing Black Legacy
And so, Trump has spent his first-year undoing Obama’s legacy. He has reversed the policy for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, transgender people serving in the military, the Paris climate accords, and the Iran nuclear deal. He has worked hard and claimed to repeal Obama Care, but failed.
Trump is on a winning streak because his alternative facts are the news. But alternative facts are lies. Trump started his Presidency with inaugural fiction. It was an omen for what was to come.
Black Legacy Fake News
At WEF, during the STU and of course on Twitter, Trump has bragged African-American unemployment is at an all-time low (6.8%). However, two important details are being ignored. The figure still reflects African -American unemployment at twice the rate of white people. And when Obama was in office in 2010 a notable and consistent downward trend began. Obama introduced a stimulus package which stimulated growth and jobs and ended what would have been a great recession.
However, Trump says he has ‘Created 2.4 million new jobs, including 200,000 new jobs in manufacturing alone.’ And while the media enthusiastically applaud, the ‘victory’ is questionable. Trump’s job creation is somewhat less than that achieved under Obama. It’s 169,000 jobs a month to Obama’s 185,000 jobs per month.
And Trump also claims, falsely, that ‘After years of wage stagnation, [Americans] are finally seeing rising wages.’ However, incomes were rising under Obama’s. But now Wages are rising at a slower rate than under Obama’s second term.
The right-wing press is overlooking important details and crouching Trump’s behaviour in respectable language. There is no mention of Trump of saying that countries that opposed his Jerusalem decision are ‘enemies of America’. And that would include Britain. Piers Morgan’s interview with Trump portrays him as an intelligent and sober man. But Trump never apologised for re-tweeting lies from the British Far Right.
Even the Guardian headline said that Trump Woos Business at WEF. But the audience booed Trump and that should have been a headline.
Trump is a dangerous self-serving would be dictator. He is a divisive predator on a mission to return race relations to 1950’s America. So, we must be careful not to let him. And that means questioning our news sources and journalists. Otherwise, he will obliterate Obama’s legacy and with it Black History.
Trump Says Obama Care Repealed
President Trump on repeal of Obamacare’s individual mandate: “So, in this bill not only do we have massive tax cuts and tax reform, we have essentially repealed Obamacare and we’ll come up with something that will be much better.” https://t.co/5A4GmFds8Bpic.twitter.com/0WBwwCU1J1
